Nishjin used to be the center of weave production even before the Edo period. Even now you can still hears the sounds of weaving machine in this neighborhood. Since 2002 something called Senryogatsuji Festival has been held in fall every year, where merchant houses open up to showcase their collections of textiles for public viewing, hoping to revitalize the the community.

"Oriyadate" is a term for Machiyas that contains space for weaving production. The production space becomes a great candidate for double height ceiling that allows natural light from the outside.
