◆◇History of Tenshi Tsukinuke area◇◆

In Japanese, "Tenshi" means Angel and "Tsukinuke" means to penetrate through. This neighborhood got its unique name when Toyotomi Hideyoshi tried to transform the city of Kyoto back in the 1590s. As part of his new city planning, it was said that he forced a Tenjin shrine to relocate in order to open up a new road, and thus the ironic name of "Tenshi Tsukinuke" was given to the area.
