A Kyo-Machiya in the Nishijin weaving district
The Nishijn area is where Kyoto's weaving industry was developed and thrived. With the small temples and shrines that have been worshiped by the locals way back in the past, the old Kyoto atmosphere can still be felt in this area.
The front of this KyoMachiya is widely connected to the alley, and at the back of the kitchen is a room where the weaving factory was operated. Look into the front Tatami room is where you can find "Hitomibari" wooden beam which was one of the traditional materials of a Machiya. This building has been passed on carefully from its past residents.
While renovation is required, you can transform the ex-weaving room into a modern room with double height ceiling while keeping the traditional Japanese flavor in other parts of the house. Why not challenge yourself to make this KyoMachiya a charming new home with rich culture and history.
Features
-
1F Tatami Room
The wooden beam on top of the front window is called "Hitomibari" that is as thick as 35cm.
-
2F Tatami Room
You can find two consecutive Tatami rooms on the 2F with comparatively tall ceiling.
-
Double Height Ceiling
The spacious earthen floor room at the back of this Machiya is approximately 53㎡ wide. While it used to be a working space with weaving machines, the double height ceiling makes this space a great candidate for living rooms.
-
Front Alley
The alley in front of the Machiya is rather spacious and the buildings around it are equal or less in height. These conditions allow plenty of sunlight inside the Machiya despite it faces the north.
