Renovation Ideas

We came up with two renovation ideas that make use of the property's character while adapting it to modern lifestyles. These are two completely different plans for the use of the building. PLAN1 3 units of collective housing

The first renovation idea is from Mr. Sakai of DICETTA, who helped renovated many Kyo-machiyas that are part of the "fikaso series". It is a plan to divide the building into three different units that combines to become a collective house for three families. The large garden with a pergola is a space for residents to gather for different occasions. The units are independent from each other, so that residents can live together in a sense of connectedness while maintaining their private space.

  • UNIT-A

    This unit centers around the Japanese-style room where you can feel the atmosphere of the original Kyo-machiya.

  • UNIT-B

    This unit will have a new entrance on the shared garden side. From here you can enjoy a private garden from the living room.

  • UNIT-C

    The first floor of this unit will be partially reduced to create an interesting tunnel that leads to the inside of the community.

PLAN2 Kyo-machiya house + Newly built house

This idea by SpaceClip is a plan to build a new house on the opposite side of the existing Kyo-machiya. The Kyo-machiya is designed for family living, and the new house will have a spacious room on the first floor with spaces where residents can work from home. A public square will be built between the two buildings to function as a disaster prevention square in the event of a disaster.

※This renovation idea which uses the collaborative architectural design system (連担建築設計制度) needs to be approved by Kyoto City.

The south area of Kyoto Station has been thriving with commercial facilities like the "AEON Mall KYOTO". This house is located on the way to Toji Temple where the famous five-story pagoda is located.
