Junichiro Tanizaki seems to have moved more than 40 times in his life. Shortly after the war, he rented the second floor of this Kyomachiya for half a year from May to November 1946 and lived with his family. Tanizaki wrote at a small desk in the room on the second floor and ate at the table on the first floor. It was also said that he has written the middle volume of his masterpiece "Sasameyuki" (also known as “The Makioka Sisters”) while living in this house. The Tsuboniwa garden has retained the remnants of those days.
