Get off the train at Arashiyama and head north along Mt. Ogura, following the ancient temples of Jojakkoji, Nison-in, and Giouji, and you will reach Saga-Toriimoto at the foot of Mt. Atago. During the Edo period, visiting Mt. Atago became popular and the historic Saga-Toriimoto area prospered as a gate town of Atago Shrine since then. The area is now designated as a traditional buildings preservation district to protect the townscape that has continued from the past.
Along the cobbled Atago-Kaido Street, Machiya-style housings and thatched-roof buildings remain. A scenery that allows you to experience the well-preserved good old Japanese atmosphere.
