The Umekoji area, developed as a project to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of the Heian Capital, also serves as a new sub-gate for sightseeing in Kyoto.

Umekoji Kyoto Nishi Station
A new station opened on March 16, 2019. One stop from Kyoto Station, it is the closest station to Kyoto Aquarium and Kyoto Railway Museum. The station building was designed to serve as a gateway for sightseeing in the western part of Kyoto Station, including Umekoji Park, and to foster development and cooperation with the surrounding area.
Kyoto Railway Museum
The Kyoto Railway Museum offers a wide range of exhibits from actual trains to dioramas. On holidays, the museum is crowded with families with children. The observation platform from which visitors can view the Shinkansen bullet trains running on the JR Tokaido mainline is also a nice feature of the museum.
Umekoji Park
A large park with the Kyoto Aquarium and the Kyoto Railway Museum within its vast grounds. A handmade market is held once a month, and the plaza at Umekoji Kyoto West Station will then be crowded with stalls and visitors.
