a hidden retreat
in the back alley

Neighborhood of Toyokuni Shrine associated with Hideyoshi.

a glimpse into
the fascinating history of Hideyoshi's life and the grandeur of the past.

The historical significance of the nearby Hokoji Temple and Toyokuni Shrine cannot be overlooked when introducing this renovated property.

Did you know that Kyoto once had a Buddha statue that was even larger than the Great Buddha of Nara? This statue, known as the "Kyo-no-Daibutsu (Kyoto's Great Buddha)", was commissioned by Hideyoshi and built at the Hokoji Temple which is located south of the property. While Hokoji was the temple that Hideyoshi built to house the Buddha statue, and at that time, it was said to have included not only the Toyokuni Shrine but also other important structures, such as the current Kyoto National Museum, the Chishakuin Temple, and the Sanjusangendo Temple, all within its precincts.

  • The area where the "Kyo-no-Daibutsu" was enshrined is now marked by the Torii gate of the Toyokuni Shrine. At that time, the main buildings of the temple complex, including the hall that housed the statue, were surrounded by a huge stone wall and fence. Unfortunately, the statue itself suffered repeated disasters and fires and was ultimately destroyed by a fire in 1973.

  • Today, the valuable remaining stone wall can still be seen on the west side, from the Toyokuni Shrine to the Kyoto National Museum, and on the south side facing the property. It is designated as a national historic site under the name "Hokoji-Daibutsuden Ruins and Stone Wall / Stone Pagoda."

  • As a side note, it is said that the largest stone at the entrance of the stone wall was brought there by the famous general Toshiie Maeda, who was ordered by Hideyoshi to transport it with great difficulty. This impressive stone wall, which once troubled Toshiie, now blends seamlessly into daily life and offers a glimpse into Hideyoshi's life and the historical romance.

By reviving the unused high-ceiling Hibukuro before the renovation and turning it into a ventilation shaft, the once dark and cramped entrance is now bright and open, dispelling any concerns about the lack of light as a house in the back alley.
The bedroom on the 1F is designed to resemble a luxury hotel, includes a ground-level window that allows for a view of the outdoors while maintaining privacy.
In contrast to the cozy atmosphere on the 1F, the 2F features a spacious and sunny living-dining-kitchen area, with dynamic ceiling beams adding an accent to the space.
Throughout the entire house, the interior design is simple and easy to use, with an emphasis on quality materials such as the use of diatomaceous earth finishes on the walls and incorporating shoji screens, creating an elegant and refined Japanese atmosphere.

The property is located in the middle of Higashiyama-Gojo and Higashiyama-Shichijo. This area is known for its compact concentration of tourist spots, making it an easily accessible and attractive destination on foot.
From traditional Japanese confectionery shops to specialty boutiques and chain stores, a wide variety of shops line the streets between Gojo and Shichijo, attracting visitors from both Japan and overseas. Designed fire extinguishers that harmonize with the decor of your room

In Kyoto, there are many areas where wooden houses are densely packed. While this property is also located in a narrow alley, it is particularly important to be careful about fire prevention. Placing a fire extinguisher in case of emergency is one way to prepare. The designed fire extinguishers sold by Hatsuta-Seisakusho are decorated with art and blend in with the room's decor. You can also see them at the open house event.Items line-up (ext. link)
