Azure Machiya Beyond the Tunnel Alley

A Kyomachiya Hidden in a
Tranquil Tunnel Alley
トンネル路地をくぐり、
路地裏の長屋へ
Every time I visit Kyoto,
My heart flutters at the sight
Of winding alleys and hidden paths.
But among them, there's a particular passage,
"Tunnel Alley," that piques my curiosity.
Bending down a little, I step forward,
And my heart races with excitement.
Soon, a row of quaint Machiyas appears.
A place where ancient tales come alive.
In the longed-for, secret Tunnel Alley,
Stands a serene and charming Machiya.
Its tranquility soothes my soul,
A sanctuary where I find inner peace.
In a place that exudes a timeless aura,
For those who seek the joy of everyday living.

This is a 72 sqm-large Kyomachiya with a 3K+loft layout. On the 1F, the kitchen and living room are arranged on the north and south respectively with a staircase hall in between which skillfully divides the spaces. The use of wooden-framed glass doors as partitions allow natural light to flow in, creating a bright and spacious overall impression. With the 2 areas gently connected, the floor is able to maintain well-defined zoning without feeling cramped. Moreover, both the kitchen and living room are equipped with floor heating, ensuring gentle warmth throughout the rooms even on cold winter days.
On the 2F, there are a bright Western-style room and a chic Japanese-style room. Each room is equipped with closets/storage, enhancing the convenience of everyday life. Additionally, there is a loft above the staircase hall that offers additional storage space, a versatile design that adapts to various lifestyles.
Featuring gray interior walls that shift in shades and soothing-hued fittings with a subtle accent of "azure", this traditional townhouse with a combination of a modern and refined ambiance is perfect for those seeking a tranquil retreat in the heart of Kyoto.

glass partitions for an airy ambience
feature 02
On the 1F, refined glass partitions are used to create a visually connected yet adequately divided space. The stylish glass doors not only offer a modern touch but also add depth to the overall space visually. Even when the partitions are closed, one can feel the other family members in the living room on the other side of the glass, providing an environment conducive to communication while performing daily tasks.

the loft like a secret base
feature 03
On the 2F, there is a loft space of approx. 1.8 Tatami mats in size. From the loft, you can gaze at the skylight above the staircase, making it feel like you're in a special adult's secret hideaway. Additionally, the space behind the display shelves provides storage for the loft ladder, keeping it neatly tucked away when not in use.
