TSUSHI-NIKAI

House with Mezzanine

The second floor ceiling of these structures is low and mainly used for storage. They often have latticed windows, known as “mushiko-mado” (insect-cage window). Machiya developed over time from the earlier one-storied houses to these tsushi-nikai and then to the so-nikai full two-storied houses.
