KUGURI-DO, O-DO

Wicket Door, Entrance Door

These machiya entrance doors are very functional. The larger door (“odo”), which opens to the inside, was used for bringing in large things into the house. The small sliding door that is built in the larger door is called “mogurido.” The mogurido is smaller than an average person’s height and only has enough width for one person to come in through. At night, for security reasons, the large door remains shut and only the smaller door is used.
