TORI-NIWA

Earthen Floor Corridor

This is a hallway with an earthen floor leading from the entrance foyer and continuing to the back of the house. The tori-niwa is divided into two parts: the private portion of the house equivalent to a modern-day kitchen (called “hashiri-niwa”) and “mise-niwa” (the public earthen floor hallway), which is separated from hashiri-niwa by an inner door or noren curtain.
