Japanese Inn by Shimabara Gate

Shimabara,
a town with a rich history

Shimabara was the first officially licensed Hanamachi Geisha district in Japan. At the end of the Edo period, Saigo Takamori, Sakamoto Ryoma, and the Shinsengumi were frequent visitors. It gradually declined and is now a residential area, but the Shimabara Omon Gate, Wachigaiya, and Sumiya retain vestiges of their former days as a Hanamachi.
Shimabara Omon is the gateway to Shimabara, surrounded by a wall. The "Mikaeri-yanagi" willow next to the gate is a reminder of those days and has become a landmark that attracts many tourists.

The property is located in a very interesting location right next to Shimabara Omon and used to be a guesthouse. You may continue to operate it as an accommodation facility or use it as a store or office. The property is also close to the central district of Kyoto and JR Kyoto Station, making it a convenient place to live.

Kinse Ryokan

A wooden structure formerly used as an Ageya teahouse with an estimated age of 250 years. Currently, the ryokan accommodates only one group of guests per day and the 1F is open as a cafe & bar.

Sumiya

Japan's only remaining Ageya building that designated as an Important Cultural Property. The building is now open to the public as the "Sumiya Museum of Hospitality and Culture.

Wachigaiya

This is an Okiya and teahouse, the only current teahouse in Shimabara. Teahouses that have a Tayu are now rare in Japan.

The building is designed with a Japanese taste. The Tatami room on 1F has a round window, which is commonly used in traditional Japanese architecture. The Shimabara Omon Gate glimpsed through the round window is sure to be a tasteful sight. This property has a small garden where you can enjoy the four seasons through the flowers and plants in the garden.

The Shimabara area is a mix of old and new, with the former Hanamachi as its starting point, and has been bustling with new life in recent years. The central wholesale market, which supports Kyoto's food, is also adjacent to the area, and you can take a stroll outside the market.

Down south is the Umekoji area, which was developed as a project to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of the Heian Capital. The area also serves as a new sub-gate for sightseeing in Kyoto. Near the new JR Umekoji Kyoto-Nishi Station, which opened in March 2019, you can find the Kyoto Railway Museum, Kyoto Aquarium, and other tourist spots. A district with many attractions for both children and adults of all ages to enjoy.
