The head shrine of over 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines across Japan. On the 25th of each month, the temple grounds come alive with the bustling “Tenjin Market,” where numerous stalls line the approach. Affectionately known as “Tenjin-san,” the shrine draws many visitors who come to pray to the deity of scholarship.

A charming street lined with traditional teahouses and shops leading to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Known as Kyoto’s oldest geisha district, it’s not uncommon to catch a glimpse of maiko and geiko passing by. The Kamishichiken Kaburenjo Theater has even served as a filming location for a recent kabuki-themed movie.

A historic shrine relocated to its current site in 794 with the establishment of the Heian capital. Celebrated as a “shrine of cherry blossoms,” it boasts over 400 trees representing around 60 varieties, drawing crowds of visitors each spring.
