West of the world heritage "Toji Temple"おくどさんのある京町家

Kyomachiya with an Okudo-san

Toji-west area, a convenient place for living and sightseeing

Introducing a Japanese-style inn property located about 20 min. on foot from JR Kyoto Sta., with Umekoji Park, Kyoto Aquarium, and AEON MALL KYOTO in the vicinity. Inside the building, an Okudo-san, which is rarely seen today, still remains which tells the history of this Kyomachiya.

The earthen floor continues from the entrance to the backyard with a fireplace above the Hashiriniwa (Toriniwa) aisle, a common layout in machiya townhouses. Thanks to the Hibukuro, the kitchen, which tends to be dark, is bright and comfortable to use. Although the Okudo-san is not actually usable, it adds a nice accent to the living in a Kyomachiya.

Toji Temple

Officially called Kyoougokokuji Temple, it is a national temple built at the time of the relocation of the capital to Heian-Kyo, and was registered as a World Heritage site in December 1994. Miedo Hall, located in the Toji Temple precinct, is a beautiful building with an Irimoya (hip-and-gable roof) and cypress bark roofing. It is said to be the place where Kobo Daishi Kukai resided during the construction of Toji Temple in order to plan and direct the construction.

Toji Temple Kobo Market

On the 21st of every month, the anniversary of Kobo Daishi's death, a market is held on the Toji Temple grounds, known affectionately as "Kobo-san". Vintage kimono and antique stores, dry goods stores, and scrubbing brush shops line the precincts of the temple, making it an enjoyable experience just to browse the stores.

Kintetsu Toji Station

Approx. 15 min. walk from the property. All trains except limited express stop there.

Rajomon ruins

The site of Rajomon, which separated Rakuchu and Rakugai (inside and outside of the capital) during the Heian period, is now used as a park. A stone monument built in one corner quietly tells its history.

Mister Gyoza

A famous gyoza (dumpling) restaurant in the neighborhood. People line up at mealtime for the juicy gyoza wrapped in fairly thicker skin. You can buy fresh or grilled gyoza at the store, but if you have time, you should definitely try the freshly grilled ones.

Kyoto Station

Approx. 20 min. walk from the property. The gateway to Kyoto where JR lines, subway lines, and Kintetsu Railway intersect.

Umekoji Park

With greenery covering an area of approx. 13.7ha, this is a place for citizens to relax in the heart of the city. Various events are held regularly on the grounds. Kyoto Aquarium and Kyoto Railway Museum are also located here.

Kyoto Aquarium

Kyoto City's first full-scale aquarium, with 5,000 jellyfish of approx. 20 species (the largest number in western Japan), the new "Jellyfish Wonder" area opened in the summer of 2020.

Kyoto Railway Museum

Japan's largest railway museum opened in Apr 2016. Based on the concept of "a center of railroad culture that walks hand in hand with the local community", 53 trains, from SL to Shinkansen, have been assembled. The diorama, driving simulator, and other facilities make this a must-see for railroad enthusiasts.

Kyoto Minami Kaikan

This mini-theater opened in 1963 and is located southeast of Toji Temple. About 300 films are shown annually, some of which can only be seen here. Renewal opened in August 2019.
