Area

Sakamoto — The Town of Ano-shu Stone Masonry,
Rich in Historical Romance

Located at the foot of Mt. Hiei, Sakamoto is known as a sacred place where Shinto and Buddhism coexist, home to both Enryakuji Temple and Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine. During the era of warlord Oda Nobunaga, many skilled stonemasons known as the Ano-shu lived in this area and played a key role in castle construction. Their traditional stone masonry technique, called Ano-shu-zumi, can still be seen throughout the town today, preserving a historically valuable and distinctive landscape.
