A Home to Be Yourself

Kyoto’s New Cultural Hub
Living with Ease

Located in the northeastern part of Kyoto’s Sakyo Ward at the foot of Mount Hiei, Ichijoji is a neighborhood where nature, culture, and everyday life blend softly together.
With universities nearby, it has long been a place where students, creators, and cultural figures gather.

Here, historic temples such as Shisendo, Ruriko-in, and Manshu-in stand alongside ramen shops, distinctive cafes, small general stores, and well-known bookstores like Keibunsha. Ichijoji has grown into an emerging cultural hub in Kyoto — a slightly whimsical place where the quiet charm of the old capital meets contemporary expression.
Just a step away from the city’s bustle, it offers leisurely walks filled with art, inspiration, and moments of calm.

For both residents and visitors, it is a place to nurture what you love and embrace a gentle, fulfilling way of life.

Getting to Know
Life in Ichijoji

We spoke with a local who knows Ichijoji well,
asking about the area’s charm and what daily life here feels like.

This time, we interviewed

koen

Opened in November 2024 in Ichijoji, Sakyo Ward, koen combines four functions—cafe, shop, gallery, and atelier—as an alternative space.
It is located about a four-minute walk from this property.

Q. Do you find Ichijoji a good environment for young couples and families?

Yes, I do. There are parks everywhere, which makes it great for families.
You often see small children playing, and the many small shops add to the warmth of the entire neighborhood. Overall, the atmosphere here feels very welcoming.

Q. What do you personally like about the Ichijoji area?

In a good way, it has a “gentle” Kyoto quality—relaxed, calm, and easy-going.
I love to stroll around, stop by whatever shop catches my eye, have casual chats with the owners or customers, and just enjoy that warm, easy atmosphere.

Area

A Beloved Neighborhood Rich
in Art and Food

Blending culture, cuisine, and nature in a beautifully balanced way, this area stands out as one of Kyoto’s most distinctive neighborhoods.
Convenience stores, supermarkets, and a wide range of restaurants are all within walking distance, making daily living effortless on foot. The atmosphere is calm and residential, with many refined cafés and bookstores. Surrounded by Mt. Hiei and dotted with parks, it also offers an environment where families can enjoy nature, relax, and raise children with peace of mind.
It is an ideal setting for young couples and families seeking a quiet, cultural lifestyle in Kyoto.

From Eizan Railway’s Ichijoji Station, it takes about six minutes to reach Demachiyanagi Station. There, you can transfer to the Keihan Line for easy access to central Kyoto, including Gion-Shijo and Kiyomizu-Gojo, as well as to Osaka’s Yodoyabashi Station.
Bus routes and bicycle access also make it convenient to reach areas such as Kitaoji, Demachiyanagi, and Shimogamo.

Gourmet

食文化・グルメ

Ichijoji is known as a lively student neighborhood with many unique and well-curated shops. A rich food culture thrives here, where long-established, community-rooted businesses coexist with a green residential environment.
The area is also famous for its cluster of renowned ramen spots, often referred to on social media as “#Kyoto Ramen Street,” drawing both locals and visitors alike. Beyond ramen, you’ll find stylish cafes, traditional wagashi shops, and Western eateries that focus on quality ingredients — offering a wide range of dining experiences.

Culture

暮らしと文化

Distinctive bookstores, such as Keibunsha Ichijoji, attract devoted fans with their curated selections, while numerous cafes, galleries, and specialty shops enrich everyday life and personal interests.
With Kyoto University of Arts located nearby, the community includes many students, artists, and creative circles, making the area known as a cultural zone where art, design, and creative activities are constantly present. Here, cultural inspiration naturally becomes part of daily living.

History

歴史・観光

The name “Ichijoji” traces back to a Tendai Buddhist temple that existed from the mid-Heian period into the medieval era. Nearby, you can visit historic sites such as Ruriko-in — known for its maple reflections on a lacquered black desk that went viral on social media — Shisendo, once a retreat for samurai Ishikawa Jozan, and Manshu-in, once known as “Takeuchi Monzeki.”
These quiet places invite you to step away from the bustle and experience the beauty of traditional architecture and gardens.

Nature

自然・景観

Although close to notable sightseeing spots, the surroundings are peaceful and residential. The Takano River flows nearby, and the foothills of Mount Hiei frame the landscape, allowing you to feel the changing seasons up close.
Parks and small playgrounds are scattered throughout the neighborhood, making it ideal for family walks. The lush greenery in spring and the vibrant foliage in autumn are especially beautiful.
