Just one street away from the lively traffic along Gojo Street, a quieter and dignified Kyoto scene unfolds. Heading north along Sakai-machi Street, where traditional machiya remain, a discreet tunnel-like alley appears on the right.
Stepping into the softly shadowed passage, the presence of the modern world begins to fade. Beyond it lies a calm, gently separated space—an almost timeless realm set apart from the city.

Passing through the latticed entrance characteristic of a Kyomachiya, a long, narrow doma earthen corridor stretches inward. Once known as the tori-niwa, it was a place where daily life naturally flowed. Aged fittings and architectural details quietly preserve the spirit of old Kyoto. Believed to have stood here since the Meiji period, this Kyomachiya has been carefully maintained and passed down through generations.

The interior is currently in skeleton condition, offering flexibility for renovation while retaining the traditional machiya framework. Rooms can be combined into an open gathering space, or transformed into a private study using restored fittings.
With imagination, a wide range of possibilities emerges. Why not begin a new way of living here, adding your own character to this historic home?
Although located just steps from Gojo Street, the house sits deep within an alley, offering a remarkably quiet living environment. The alley is used only by a limited number of people, with no vehicle traffic, creating a sense of calm and security. This unique setting allows for peaceful living right next to the city center.
The tori-niwa corridor extending from the entrance toward the rear is a distinctive feature of Kyomachiya design. Two rooms line this passage, and by removing the partitions, they can be combined into an open, spacious area. The layout offers flexibility to suit different lifestyles, while retaining the characteristic depth unique to machiya homes.
On the second floor, windows on both the east and west sides provide ample natural light and allow fresh breezes to pass through. Traditional machiya details remain throughout, and the large exposed beams overhead convey a strong, dignified presence. While the earthen walls show signs of age, their texture can be embraced as part of a character-rich interior.

The interior is currently in skeleton condition, with columns, beams, and structural elements fully exposed. This allows for a well-planned renovation while closely examining the building’s original framework.
On the first floor, the tori-niwa once served to improve ventilation and help prevent fire spread—a function it continues to fulfill today by bringing fresh air and light deep into the house. Two adjoining tatami rooms, originally six and four-and-a-half mats in size, can be opened up by adjusting partitions to create a more expansive space while preserving the traditional atmosphere.
The second floor mirrors this layout and currently has its ceiling removed, revealing beams and roof structures that reflect the home’s history. At the rear, a narrow storage room offers a cozy, enclosed feel—well suited as a private study, small theater, or hobby room that makes use of the patina developed over time.
