Renovated Kominka in Otsu

Kominka Life
with Mountain & Lake

Drive about 40 minutes to the east from the center of Kyoto city, get off the Nishi-Otsu Bypass Road (free highway) at the "Shigasato Ramp" and you will reach Sakamoto, a historic town at the foot of Mt. Hiei.

A town with a traditional atmosphere that has a history as the town of "Satobo", a retreat for monks who trained on Mt. Hiei, also preserving the scenery of the "Anoshuzumi" stone walls.

The refreshing breeze that blows down from the mountains, Lake Biwa that shines on the water surface...

Introducing a renovated "Kominka" old folk house in a cityscape where you can feel the magnificent natural scenery and history.

  • The building ahead of the alley

Get into the alley when seeing the Jizo statue and the building is sitting in front of you. The refurbished roof tile and the green of the lawn will surely catch your attention at the first sight.

  • The Bangal red entrance

Facing an alley with beautiful hedges, the entrance passes under the deep eave that features a Kominka. The white wall shines and contrasts with the vermilion paints.

  • Entrance hall with double-height ceiling

After opening the solid entrance door, you will find the entrance hall that retains the atmosphere of an old folk house with sunlight that quietly illuminates the space.

  • Tatami rooms in continuation

On the west side of the building, two large Tatami rooms inherit the plan of the original house. Overlooking the garden from the tatami mats, the alcove, and the porch... Here you can enjoy the taste of a traditional Japanese architecture.

  • Courtyard and Living room

The east side of the building has been renovated with a modern touch. Sunlight and good ventilation can be secured with the courtyard by the living room.

  • Room with exposed ceiling beams

On the 2nd floor, a spacious Western-style room with exposed beams, which is typical of a Kominka, creates a dynamic space.

  • The panorama of Mt. Hiei

Sakamoto,
a town full of
historical romance

Located at the foot of Mt. Hiei, Sakamoto is said to be the place of Shinto and Buddhist training where Enryakuji Temple and Hiyoshi-Taisha Shrine are located. In the old days of Nobunaga, many masonry craftsmen known as "Ano-shu" who had paid an important role in constructing castles settled here, leaving a number of precious stone walls called "Anoshuzumi" in the area.
