Lofty Machiya near Tofukuji Temple
A Kyo-machiya located south of Tofukuji Station on JR and Keihan lines.
While it is conveniently located only one stop away from Kyoto Station (about a 2-minute ride on the JR train), the surrounding area is dotted with historical and tourist attractions such as Tofukuji Temple, Sennyuji Temple, and Shorinji Temple, all of which add color to the ancient capital, and the downtown atmosphere typical of Kyoto remains strongly in the streetscape.
The building has a history of more than 100 years, with construction dating back to the Meiji period according to the closed registry.
Upon entering the entrance, a large space with depth spreads out before your eyes.
At the center of the house is a large atrium with a semi-underground space that was once an air-raid shelter right below. The openness of the atrium is emphasized by the lowered floor level from the ground, and by utilizing such an elevation difference, it is possible to create an original residence with an extraordinary floor plan.
Most of the interior materials have been removed that you can see the old pillars, plaster walls with exposed bamboo shingles, and wood with a rusty patina from ages, creating a calming nostalgic atmosphere, while evoking the deep history of the building at the same time.

How about designing your own favorite cozy corner?
Office-and-Home SOHO Plan
This is a SOHO plan that integrates work and residence, where the space for living coexists with the office space.
One of the most attractive features is that the office is located one level lower than the ground, providing a sense of coziness even without partitions. The courtyard also lets in a hint of sunlight, creating a bright and open space with a sense of release.
Going up the stairs by the entrance and you will find a simple but well-equipped living space. By separating the functions of each floor, this plan provides the house owner privacy even in an office with many visitors, which also allows a good balance between work and private life.
Spacious plan for enjoying hobbies
A spacious floor plan for families of 2 or 3.
The cloakroom connected to the entrance provides useful storage space for storing shoes, umbrellas, heater, etc. The rectangular-shaped LDK has a sense of unity, and you can enjoy the garden view even from the kitchen!
The old shelter half-basement turns into a wine cellar which is heartening for wine-lovers. It is said that a place with low temperature, little temperature change, and moderate humidity is most suitable for wine storage, and a basement fulfills all these requirements.
Other usages can also be considered, such as a collection room, a small atelier, or a hobby room.
