清水五条 明治の京町家-Kiyomizugojo Kyomachiya from Meiji era-

Precious townhouses passed down through the ages

The era of Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, and the current Reiwa.
This valuable Machiya, which has been passed down through the ages, is located in an area where one can fully experience the history of Kyoto.

Introducing 3 Machiya houses were built more than 130 years ago, with one facing the street while the other 2 located in a private pathway.
At the end of the pathway, which is tastefully decorated with a cedar fence, there is an open space that one would not expect to find at the end of an alley, a veritable retreat.

The interior of the house has been dismantled, and you can actually see the beams and pillars with the beauty of age, together with the plaster walls with a sense of history left over from the Meiji period.

The front building facing Sayamachi St. is a welcoming space for guests and is ideal for public uses such as galleries and receptions.
Although the building is now in skeleton status, its plaster-finished exterior walls, Degoshi lattice, Ranma transoms, Mushiko-mado windows, and the Hibukuro atrium, retain enough of the design features typical of a Kyomachiya townhouse.
Thanks to the atrium and the top-light, the rooms are bright enough during the daytime, and you can enjoy the greenery of the courtyard from the bay window through the Jimado window and Shoji screens.

In contrast to the open space of the front, the back can be considered as a private space.
Because the inner buildings are located at the end of a private passageway on the south side of the front, it offers a high degree of privacy and security and is recommended for a second house.
With the open courtyard, lighting and ventilation can be ensured despite its location at the end of the alley.
Formerly 2 buildings, this inner Kyomachiya was once a two-storey house. Although there are 2 entrances, the walls have been removed, so the 2 buildings can be used together as a single one depending on the renovation.
