Kyomurasaki Machiya

A Machiya Inspired by the Kyoto Purple Hue

This “Kyomurasaki Machiya” takes its name from Kyomurasaki—a traditional Japanese color distinguished from the more vibrant Edomurasaki favored in Edo. While Edo embraced bold, lively tones, Kyoto nurtured a sense of quiet elegance and refined beauty. Kyomurasaki embodies this distinctly Kyoto aesthetic.

This home is a place where you can cherish what you love. A space where you can immerse yourself in your hobbies, find calm, and spend each day in a way that feels true to you—an environment that naturally cultivates an inner sense of grace.

While preserving the charm that has deepened over time, you can create a home that reflects your own sensibilities.

Okazaki, Sakyo Ward— A District Where Art and Elegance Flourish

Located between central Kyoto and the Higashiyama area, Okazaki has long been a place where culture and nature exist in harmony.

Historic sites such as Heian Jingu Shrine and Nanzen-ji Temple stand quietly, while the flow of the Lake Biwa Canal reflects the colors of each season, lending a gentle atmosphere to the neighborhood. Art is woven into daily life here, with cultural institutions like the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the Kyocera Museum of Art scattered throughout the area, offering moments of beauty at every turn.

Strolling through museums, listening to music, encountering craftsmanship, capturing the changing scenery—living in Okazaki means bringing elegance into the rhythm of everyday life. This is a place that quietly supports such a refined way of living.

Okazaki Nishifukunokawacho—A Neighborhood Steeped in Literary Atmosphere

This property is located in Nishifukunokawacho, a quiet residential area set just a little apart from the lively heart of Okazaki. Here, away from the noise, a serene atmosphere allows you to clear your mind and spend time with the things you truly love.

In the late Taisho period, the modern poet Chuya Nakahara and Motojiro Kajii, author of the celebrated short story “Lemon,” both lived in this neighborhood. Close to Kyoto Imperial University and the former Third Higher School, the area once bustled with students and scholars.

Even in an ordinary residential quarter, you can sense subtle traces of literature and culture—something distinctly Kyoto. With streetscapes different from the city’s grid pattern and a blend of Japanese and Western, old and new, this neighborhood brings gentle richness to everyday life.

Renovation

There are moments in everyday life when inspiration suddenly arrives—
What if you could nurture those sparks of creativity as a natural extension of your daily routine? A lifestyle where creation and living flow gently into one another. With that idea in mind, we imagined a space within this property—a place designed for days spent blending art and life.

"Atelier + Residence Plan"

Kyomurasaki Kyomachiya

In everyday life, you can display the things you love just as they are—on the living room shelves or along the walls of the dining and lounge area. Objects discovered at the Heian Antique Market or vessels chosen from vintage shops add subtle color and character to your daily surroundings.

But when you open the doors connecting the living room, entrance hall, and dining-kitchen, the atmosphere transforms. Arrange your pieces neatly on the display shelves, and the room begins to feel like a curated gallery—spacious, calm, and ideal for welcoming guests, even on busy days.

Of the two rooms on the second floor, one becomes a quiet workspace where thought and handwork intersect. The inspirations you gather in Okazaki can be gently captured before they fade—an intimate place to immerse yourself in research, materials, and tools spread across the floor.

The adjoining room serves as the bedroom, where you can rest while still holding the afterglow of creation. In this home, living and making blend softly together, forming a peaceful refuge that nurtures your everyday sensibilities.

Plan

The original built-in kitchen has been removed, and parts of the toilet area and the first-floor Western-style room were renovated by a previous owner. The washbasin and kitchen can be installed according to your preferences. Some of the old wooden fittings remain, and their aged texture and touch convey a sense of the home’s history.

On the stair landing and in the second-floor tatami rooms, traditional details and a nostalgic charm are preserved, giving the home a quietly appealing character. The second floor includes two 4.5-tatami rooms, each with a practical size that makes them ideal for moments of focused work or calm immersion. Throughout the house, patterned glass is used, and features such as the tiled bathroom surfaces add retro character in various places.

*Renovation is required for use of the building, though some pillars and beams can be reused.
