Jodoji hiyori
ConceptA Space Woven by the Beauty of In-Between
In this quiet corner of Jodoji—where culture and nature gently meet—we created a retreat for stepping away from the everyday.
Ceramic roof tiles run from the entrance through the kitchen and living areas to the garden, linking each space as one. The house becomes a modern engawa, where inside and outside blur, and connection unfolds naturally.
Inspired by the idea of a “fireside salon” near the Philosopher’s Path, we crafted this home with care, together with friends who studied architecture while working full-time.
Spend your weekends in Kyoto, feeling the seasons and returning to yourself—a second home where new ties quietly take root.
Where culture and nature meet in quiet harmony—Jodoji, Kyoto.
Just a short walk from Ginkaku-ji and the Philosopher’s Path, Jodoji is a quiet area where the seasons and a sense of history gently unfold.
Bookstores, galleries, and small cafés express the neighborhood’s unique culture, making it an ideal retreat from the bustle of central Kyoto.

A Space Connected by Ceramic Roof Tiles
Step inside and a continuous floor of ceramic roof tiles unfolds, linking the entrance to the dining room, living area, and engawa.
The muted tones lead naturally toward the garden, where the engawa becomes a place for gathering around a gentle, flickering flame.

A Home Shaped by Light and Shadow
Plastered walls, wooden ceiling boards, and floors of ceramic roof tiles create a rich, textured atmosphere.
Natural light from the windows blends gently with spotlights and warm-toned lamps, quietly illuminating each surface.
The materials and shadows unique to a Kyomachiya bring depth and nuance to everyday living.
A Second Place to Belong
Whether visiting with the seasons or staying for the weekend, this home offers moments of ease—resting on the raised tatami platform or relaxing in hotel-like comfort.
Its traditional machiya facade and the changing seasons work together to calm the spirit.
A quiet, grounding retreat—another place to call your own.
間取図PLAN…………
Located just off Shishigatani Street in the quiet residential district of Jodoji, this home welcomes you with a first floor paved entirely in ceramic roof tiles—extending from the entrance to the outdoor living area and creating a space rich in light and shadow.
Because the flooring is suitable for shoes, the entire first floor can function as a salon, studio, or workspace.
Upstairs, the tatami room and floors finished in persimmon tannin offer a warm, textured ambiance, while amenities such as the second-floor toilet ensure comfortable everyday living within a traditional Kyomachiya setting.
Designed with second-home sharing in mind, the house includes two mailboxes, a lockable storage shelf, and a linen room created from the original storage space.
設計・工事・監修 DESIGN…………
Every detail has been planned to offer a “third place” where one can experience the essence of Kyoto. We hope that the connections formed here—with us and with the surrounding community—will weave new ties for the next person who inherits this home.
