Approximately a six-minute walk from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Nijō Castle, this kyomachiya is quietly tucked away along a calm alley.

Respecting the essence of the kyomachiya—modest on the outside, rich within—the home has been carefully renewed to suit contemporary living.

The renovation strikes a thoughtful balance between preserving the historical and cultural value unique to kyomachiya and providing the comfort expected of a modern residence. Behind its traditional exterior lies a surprisingly modern and comfortable interior; it is this contrast between inside and out, this duality, that defines the enduring appeal of the kyomachiya.

A Kyomachiya Preserving Meiji-Era Charm, Illuminated by Deep Green Tiles

The deep green tiles adorning the exterior walls add a simple and charming character to the facade.

While prioritizing privacy and security, patterned glass and steel pipe latticework are used to create an exterior that harmonizes with the design language of neighboring machiya.Soft interior lighting gently illuminates the alley at night, subtly conveying a sense of life and presence to the outside.

This quiet expression fosters an open, welcoming relationship with the surrounding community and contributes to a more connected neighborhood atmosphere.

A Connection with Nature

An electrically operated skylight set above the open stairwell draws in soft natural light while providing gentle, natural ventilation throughout the home. As fresh air circulates smoothly, the interior maintains a consistently calm and comfortable atmosphere.

On the first floor, a tsuboniwa courtyard is paired with a picture window to bring light and greenery indoors while shielding the space from outside views. This creates a subtle connection between interior and exterior, allowing the presence of nature to be felt as part of everyday life. At the heart of this design stands a symbolic tree, the Soyogo (Ilex pedunculosa).

Its glossy leaves swaying in the breeze, delicate white blossoms and fresh fragrance in early summer, and bright red berries in autumn convey the changing seasons through the senses. By living in close harmony with nature, this kyomachiya offers a gentle sense of comfort and quiet richness to daily life.

RENOVATION POINTS

The layout is designed to gently bring the charm and sense of richness unique to kyomachiya into modern everyday living.

Entrance / Inner entryway
Entrance / Inner entryway

This doma entry space functions as a transition from the main entrance to the inner entryway, offering flexibility for bicycle storage and direct guest reception from the kitchen.

Kitchen on the first floor
Kitchen on the first floor

Because the front room faces the alley, it was planned as a kitchen rather than a living or sleeping space. The floor is set one step lower and finished in tile, with translucent glass used to soften views from outside.
Natural light enters through waist-high windows, while the refrigerator and washing machine are concealed behind traditional mairado sliding doors, creating a clean, semi-open kitchen.

Naka-no-ma
Naka-no-ma

On the first floor, the “Naka-no-ma” is positioned as an inner entrance hall. Set back from the exterior, it functions as a flexible connecting space linking the kitchen and a Western-style room, allowing for a variety of uses.
On the second floor, the “Naka-no-ma” is planned as a stair hall with an open void, serving as an anteroom to both a Western-style room and a tatami room. By introducing this intermediary space, the independence of each room is enhanced while maintaining a thoughtful level of privacy.

Western-style room on the first floor
Western-style room on the first floor

Interior spaces are generally understood as “boxes,” defined by the elements of floor, walls, and ceiling. In this Western-style room, however, the west-facing wall is detached from the ceiling plane and extended further inward, deliberately softening the visual boundaries of the space.
By releasing the room from the sense of enclosure and pressure often associated with closed interiors, the design aims to ease everyday stress and create a space where one can relax comfortably.

Tsuboniwa / Picture Window

The most important space in this kyomachiya is a small garden of approximately 1.6 square meters. Visible from nearly all areas of the first floor, it brings light and air into the home while drawing nature indoors through a carefully positioned picture window. The picture window also functions like a frame, appropriately screening views from the neighboring apartment building while maintaining a gentle connection to the garden. By keeping distance from the outside world and selectively capturing only nature, the design creates a serene and richly textured living environment.

Bathroom
Bathroom

This compact bathroom is composed of a bathing area and a washbasin/changing space, gently divided by glass.
A hinoki wood–paneled ceiling and stone-finished floor create a pleasant material contrast, while a picture window facing the garden adds a sense of openness. Surrounded by natural elements, the space offers a calm and relaxing environment.

Open staircase
Open staircase

In traditional kyomachiya, the naka-no-ma (inner room) is typically a dimly lit space. Here, natural light drawn in through a skylight is diffused by the open-riser staircase, allowing light to spread gradually like a soft gradient and gently illuminate the naka-no-ma on the first floor.

Western-style room on the second floor
Western-style room on the second floor

The Western-style room on the second floor is intended for use as a bedroom. Indirect lighting is installed along the sloped ceiling and near the head of the bed, allowing the brightness to be adjusted while lying down. This enables soft lighting scenes tailored to bedtime or moments of relaxation. A walk-in closet is also provided, offering ample storage space.

Tatami room on the second floor
Tatami room on the second floor

The tatami room on the second floor is directly accessible from the entrance, allowing movement without passing through other living spaces. This makes it well suited for use as a guest room or an additional bedroom. The adjacent wooden-floored area can be flexibly used as a workspace, children’s room, or extra storage, adapting easily to different lifestyles. In addition, shoji windows installed along the stair side allow air to flow naturally toward the skylight, ensuring gentle and effective ventilation.

Living in Harmony with Nature
Living in Harmony with Nature

By opening the electrically operated skylight above the open stairwell and the window beneath the picture window in the first-floor Western-style room, a vertical airflow is created that connects the upper and lower floors. This gentle circulation helps maintain a calm indoor environment, allowing comfortable natural ventilation to flow throughout the home.

Electrically operated skylight

An electrically operated skylight is installed to provide ample natural light and ventilation. It is equipped with a rain sensor and automatically closes when rain is detected, even while you are away from home.

Window Facing the Tsuboniwa

Window Facing the Tsuboniwa

Opening the window beneath the shelf facing the tsuboniwa allows a gentle breeze to pass through the room. Around June, the sweet fragrance of the soyogo tree—blooming with small white flowers—softly drifts into the interior.

Tsuboniwa

Tsuboniwa (Courtyard Garden)

While soaking in the bathtub, the garden can be enjoyed through a glass opening. By dimming the bathroom lighting and illuminating the garden instead, the trees are softly highlighted, creating an atmospheric and almost dreamlike scene.

First-Floor Western-Style Room

First-Floor Western-Style Room

The east-facing wall and the built-in storage counter are conceived as a space akin to an exhibition gallery or a tokonoma alcove. Spotlights installed within the louvers can rotate 360 degrees, beautifully accentuating displayed artworks or objects.

Picture Hooks

Picture Hooks / First-Floor Western-Style Room

Discreetly placed picture hooks are installed on the wall, allowing favorite artwork or photographs to be displayed with ease. *Three locations are provided.

Ceiling Power Outlet

Ceiling Power Outlet / First-Floor Western-Style Room

A power outlet is installed in the ceiling, enabling the use of a ceiling-mounted projector. The white wall surface can be used as a screen, making this space suitable for enjoying a simple home theater setup.

Gas Clothes Dryer (Kanta-kun)

Gas Clothes Dryer (Kanta-kun)

Powered by high heat unique to gas drying, laundry can be dried quickly and efficiently. Towels and clothing are finished soft and fresh, allowing laundry to be done comfortably regardless of rain or pollen seasons. Eliminating the need for hanging also helps reduce daily household chores.

Towel Warmer

Towel Warmer / Washroom

Wet towels can be dried quickly after use, ensuring warm towels are available after bathing. The gentle heat radiating from the unit also subtly warms the surrounding space.

Towada Stone

Towada Stone / Washroom and Bathroom

Characterized by its soft gray-green hue with a bluish tone, Towada stone reveals rich, nuanced textures depending on the light. Traditionally used in baths and open-air hot springs, it is highly water-resistant and valued for its smooth, pleasant feel to the touch.
